American multinational corporation infuses fresh perspective to make Code of Conduct training more than just an annual mandate

Challenge

The client wanted to create a valuable and unique Code of Conduct training that would provide regular orientation and guidance to their employees. The training would be a tool for navigating compliance issues faced by employees in their day-to-day work. All employees and contractors need to be aware of their code of business conduct rules and guidelines. 

Although this was already available as a PDF document on their website, the client’s intent was to build an in-house library of custom compliance training courses that serve as a valuable point of reference, directing employees to locate resources and services related to ethics and compliance within the organization. 

Additionally, the solution needed to: 

  • Drive a renewed focus on company culture and fostering trust
  • Build deeper integration with internal stakeholders 

The organization found that learners exhibited poor engagement, and it very often had to coax and cajole learners towards completing the Code of Conduct training course. The current training—in a simple read-and-agree format for their compliance training—was no longer acceptable. Making the course personalized and relevant was the immediate need.  

Strategy & Solution

To meet objectives and overcome challenges systematically, ELB Learning created a unique environment through “embedded learning.” Embedded learning is a methodology in which the learner is actively involved in the learning experience, simply described as “learning while doing.” Research indicates that embedded learning addresses motivation and engagement issues and can also drive 3x times improvement in training performance compared to other training approaches. 

The course was presented through the eyes of a fictitious company, complete with employee profiles, and storylines. Each storyline was presented through real-life scenarios, allowing employees to play an active role in the training. 

ELB Learning created a four-season training roadmap through the end of 2024. The courses were designed to be delivered to the audience across multiple seasons (years) starting from 2021. Each season would have its own visual identity, using specially designed templates. The multiformat microlearning modules were delivered in seven languages, including Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Korean.

The key features of the course are: 

  • Each season consists of a single episode focusing on a few logically grouped topics (e.g., Anti-bribery, Corruption, Conflicts of Interest, etc.) from the Code of Conduct. It was designed to be 15-20 minutes in duration.
  • It includes assessment questions for key concepts. Additionally, quarterly 90-second microlearning reinforces the content presented in each season. 
  • Learners play an active part in the scenario and make decisions to progress in the course
  • At the end of each season, learners can read or download the relevant pages or clauses from the code of conduct. 
  • Every season was accompanied by a pre-release teaser video to build interest for the upcoming season.

Results

By developing this training rather than purchasing an off-the-shelf training product, the organization was able to deliver training that deeply resonated with employees. The scenario-based, interactive bite-sized Code of Conduct learning program created a wave of renewed interest in compliance that has not yet subsided. 

In a nutshell: 

  • The client was able to deliver the course to 13,500 employees and contractors globally with an unprecedented 100% completion rate in 45 days. 
  • The training scored an average employee rating of 4.5 out of 5. 
  • Code of Conduct compliance training and awareness have proved to be a valuable business driver, beneficial to the company's commercial objectives and sustainability. 

Further, the key outcome of this training was that all the compliance-related concepts were understood and assimilated by all employees and contractors. 

They are now able to: 

  • Recognize the importance of the organization’s Code of Conduct and applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including compliance with Federal Sentencing Guidelines. 
  • Clearly understand the responsibilities and expectations of behavior under the Code. 
  • Understand and apply the Code of Business Conduct and policies that govern interactions with customers, and other third parties.
